Reason for hash name: He's from Malta and he looks a bit like that large green/blue bird from The Muppet Show...although, erm, on double-checking, he was actually called 'Sam the Eagle'. However, 'The Maltese Eagle' lacked the finesse of 'The Maltese Falcon' (a 1941 film noir written and directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, and based on Dashiell Hammett's 1929 novel of the same name...just in case you were wondering), hence why the latter stuck.
Having said that, given Dr Dan's standing in the community of a person of repute, Sam the Eagle's countenance seemed to fit rather nicely:
"Sam the Eagle is an American eagle who feels his species and role as national symbol have placed certain responsibilities upon his shoulders. Sam is appalled by the nonsense that passes for entertainment on the series and does his best to keep things in check, even though his pleas for an end to madness are usually ignored. Sam's overpowering burden is to act as the "moral center" of The Muppet Show. He would, in fact, like to concern himself with the morals of the entire world, but "regrets that it takes all his time and energy just to keep up with The Muppet Show."
See! Replace 'The Muppet Show' for 'HWH3' and there you have it!
