[To the tune of Josh MacRae's 1962 hit, "Messing About On The River"]

When the weather is fine then you know it's a sign
For hashing alongside the river.
If you take my advice there's nothing so nice
As hashing alongside the river.
There's a long run and a short run, and on-backs as well,
And shiggy and falsies and much more to tell,
So park near the trains and switch off your brains,
For hashing alongside the river.

Bring trainers and shorts, but you won't need a torch,
For hashing alongside the river.
Or you might want to walk, and just have a talk,
When hashing alongside the river.
There are swallows and seagulls and swans and some ducks,
And dogs that will chase them from Berks into Bucks.
With the wind* in your face there's no finer place
Than hashing alongside the river.

There's Hawkeye with bike, and Ant wearing Nike,
Just hashing alongside the river.
There are walkers - and cubs - and the great Bounty pub,
When hashing alongside the river.
With regroups and checkpoints, and blobs set with flour,
And a trail that's so flat we'll be back in an hour,
At this time of year, it fills you with cheer
To go hashing alongside the river.

Back at the inn, there's only one thing,
After hashing alongside the river.
And that is the chips, with plenty of dips,
After hashing alongside the river.
The GM he whistles, then waffles a bit,
But we've all got a beer now so we don't give a hoot,
Next week will be fun - but not as much fun
As hashing alongside the river.

*NB just to clarify, this is not a reference to the hare's flatulence, I wouldn't be so rude as to draw attention to that.
